Alan Blake shows his gratitude to Concord Hospital by helping award annual scholarships to the next generation of nurses and other allied health professionals. His commitment as chair of Concord Hospital Trust’s Scholarship Subcommittee is repaid every year when he sees grateful students receive their awards. “I feel like I am contributing in a small way to something that is much bigger than I am. Being part of an organization, even in a small way, that is doing good work is very gratifying,” said Alan, chair of the Scholarship Subcommittee since 2010 and Director of Communications at New Hampshire Technical Institute (NHTI), which offers a two-year nursing program. By supporting future nurses and other health professionals who might work at Concord Hospital after graduation, Alan said the Scholarship Fund program is an important way the Hospital re-invests in the community. Grateful NHTI nursing scholarship recipient Kristen Tessler agrees. She’s worked at Concord Hospital for 15 years as a medical assistant at Concord Imaging Center – part of the team that performs breast biopsies. “The scholarship gave me anopportunity to go further with my education,” she said. “And knowing that I am being supported through the Hospital Trust – it makes me want to stay here.” Kristen works part-time at Concord Imaging, while attending nursing classes and raising an eight-year-old daughter. She graduates in May with an associate degree in nursing and plans to remain at Concord Hospital and study for a bachelor’s degree. She said those who support Concord Hospital Trust also are supporting the community by giving students like her a chance to become part of an organization dedicated to keeping the community healthy.“ People don’t realize the impact it has on us,” she said. “It allowed me to pursue my dream and my passion and stay with the Hospital. Through the Trust, they are giving back, and maybe they will see me someday as a patient, knowing that their support put me here to take care of them.
